3GP - This is MP4 format used for some mobile devices and cell phones

 

AAC -- (also known as Advanced Audio Coder) is an audio encoding format that was supposed to overtake MP3 format but really hasn't taken off.

 

AVI -- an Acronym for Audio Video Interleaved is probably the most common file format for storing audio/video on PCs in the world.

 

CD -- Stands for "compact disc". A Circular disk that stores data or music in optical form.

 

CD-R -- A CD which can have data or music written to it once.

 

CD-RW -- A CD capable of saving data or music over and over again.

 

Codec -- An acronym for "Compressions/Decompression". A Codec is a specialized program that encodes or reduces the number of bytes used by large files and programs.

 

Combo Drive -- A computer drive capable of reading and writing data to either CD or DVD.

 

DivX -- a video format developed by DivX, Inc. which is well known for its ability to compress long video segments into small files.

 

DV -- Stands for "Digital Video". This is video captured to a computer or device (such as a TiVo®) from a digital recording device such as a camcorder or digital video recorder (DVR).

 

DVD -- Stands for "Digital Video Disc" or "Digital Versatile Disk". It is about the same size of a CD but holds as much as seven times the data/files. DVDs are used to store full length motion pictures, backup computer data, store music and much more.

 

DVD-R -- A DVD which can have data, video or music stored to it once.

 

DVD-RW -- (also referred to as DVD+RW) A DVD capable of saving data, video or music over and over again.

 

DVD Chapter -- A small segment of video (usually a scene). Chapters of video make up an entire movie on a DVD.

 

DVR -- Stands for "Digital Video Recorder". A recording device that saves broadcasts to a hard drive in digital format. The most common DVD is the TiVo®.

 

MOV -- (also referred to as .mov) Apple® QuickTime's video file format used in movies and animations.

 

MP3 -- A compressed file format which allows audio files to be transferred via the Internet and played on portable audio players and MP3 players.

 

MP4 -- (also known as mpeg-4, .mp4) -- is the file format used to store media types defined by the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group. It is the format used by Apple® for video playback on the iPod Video Player. It is also the format used by the Sony PSP and other MP3 video players.

 

MPEG -- Stands for "Motion Picture Experts Group". This is the standard for compressing and storing audio and video files on the Internet and transferring them to portable audio/video players.

 

MPEG-4 -- See Definition for MP4

 

.mp4 -- See Definition for MP4

 

RM -- A Real Media movie file which typically stores video clips and movies.

 

RMVB -- an abbreviation for "Real Media variable bitrate". Is a file type used with Real Media Player.

 

SVCD  -- Stands for "Super Video CD". A CD capable of holding more video and audio than a VCD.

 

TiVo -- A Popular brand name manufacturer of DVRs.

 

VCD - Stands for "Video Compact Disc". This is a CD which contains video and audio files similar to DVD.

 

VOB -- A data file used in DVDs to store video, audio, graphics or other files.

 

WMV -- Stands for "Windows Media Video". A Streaming video file used to transfer video and audio over the Internet.

 

.wmv -- is the file format used by Windows Media Video Player.

 

XVid -- An open source MP4 codec used by programmers to develop software and video.
